Repair Shop Manager – Rotating Equipment
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
- To set methods and criteria for execution of repair work in the shop.
- To ensure the technical integrity of all work performed in the Repair Shop.
- To ensure that all quality requirements are met while respecting the job cost targets.
- To assist the shop floor during the repair execution.
- To generate and issue in a professional and timely manner, accurate job instructions to the shop floor.
- To support the Sale Engineers in quotation phase.
BACKGROUND and EXPERIENCE
- Degree in mechanical engineering.
- Proven experience in rotating equipment repair or manufacturing preferable.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills
- Good understanding of engineering practices
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal in English.
- Working knowledge of PC and management software systems. Generally computer literate.
NATURE OF THE JOB
- This is an individual contributor type position with a need for much interface, internal and external.
- Development of procedures and systems.
- Technical liaison between shop and customer service.
- Involved in tooling and fixturing design and implementation.
- Creating and designing technical procedures and fixtures.
- Whereas numerous policies and procedures exist, the job involves responding to many unfamiliar situations and requires that they be accommodated within policies and procedures.
- This position does require a flexible minded individual who is able to think on their feet and respond to shifting priorities.
- A creative / innovative open mind is essential.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
- Internal contacts include hourly staff, shop foreman, production controller, shop manager, service sales engineers, purchasing.
- Less frequently but required internal contacts would include technical services department, field services and Parts dept.
- Outside company contacts would include vendors, customers and technical support consultants.
- Travel requirements are about 5 – 10% depending upon business conditions.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel with little or no notice are very important in the service shop. Duration of out of shop assignments average one to three days, but can occasionally extend to longer periods
SUPERVISION
None. On occasion, when needed, may direct and or supervise the shop hourly staff..
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES
All the areas of this job are important, and are therefore not in any specific order:
- Issuing of work instructions for shop floor
- Preparing repair quotations.
- Technical assistance to customer service and shop floor.
- Tooling and fixturing design and developing.
- Handling of customer questions and technical problems.
- Assisting Field Services where requited
- Assisting and supervising hourly work force.
- Specifying detail in more complex purchase requisitions
- Support purchasing Dept. to select and find and qualify new vendors
- Control of shop technical documentation.
- A good understanding and demonstrable exposure to Health and Safety is essential.
