Summary of Role

The senior quality engineer must have a varied range of skills as they may fulfil many roles, from overseeing everyday factory floor activities in order to train operators, to acting as a liaison between suppliers and customers. They will also define the methods and equipment used to measure a process’s key quality characteristics.
The engineer will also attempt to improve the standard of the process, using information collected from the operations and then applying problem-solving techniques. The role is also responsible for training the production workers in updated work procedures and productions.
The quality engineer is also responsible for dealing and closing out all customer complaints. The Quality engineer then allocates resources based on whatever the source of the problem is. This may include working with sales and purchasing, and product engineering, as well as liaising with the suppliers of the parts. This person is also responsible for improving product and process yields through the production process as well as introducing new products alongside the production, engineering and sales teams.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Customer/Supplier liaison on Quality Engineering and none conformance

  • Management and motivation of existing quality staff and resources, including the first stage of the disciplinary and grievance procedure
  • To authorise process documents/batch cards/inspection method sheets upon completion
  • Provide close quality support to production, engineering and sales.
  • Implementation of continuous improvement techniques – using statistical analysis tools and improving using best practice methods.
  • Analyse and facilitate/drive the investigation of internal rejects to achieve effective solutions.
  • Investigate, resolve and report trends within internal rejects.
  • Carry out Audits, to ensure compliance with appropriate procedures and standards.
  • Take part in internal initiatives to achieve continual improvement to processes.
  • Produce product specific data/documentation as required.
  • Control external specifications (BSI etc)
  • Review internal processes and procedures on a periodic basis for improvement.
  • Implementation of process capability checks.
  • Deputise for Compliance Manager in Customer meetings/visits when required.
  • Special projects as defined by Senior Management
  • Other duties that may be required from time to time
  • Provide detailed analysis for the engineering/production department for all trials.
  • Create monthly reports for the Operations Manager.
  • Responsibility for inspection operators alongside the production manager
  • Responsibility for training and developing quality awareness on site.
  • Ensuring compliance to ISO9001, 14001 and 18001.

Education and Experience

Essential:

 Experienced systems and process auditor.

  • Knowledge and experience of using CI quality tools.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Gauge R & R
  • SPC
  • Experienced Minitab software user
  • Analytical skills.
  • Experience with MS Office including word, excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to effectively communicate both internally and externally.
  • Team player in a cross functional environment.
  • HNC/HND in an engineering discipline
    • Extensive knowledge of appropriate standards (BS EN ISO 9001:2008, BS EN ISO 14001:2005, OHSAS 18001:2007 and PAS 99: 2006 etc.)
